100 Years of Turkish Republic Day Ball - 100. YIL CUMHURIYET BALOSU

You are invited to the 100th Year Republic Ball, hosted by the Turkish Student Association at the University of Ottawa, in collaboration with the Migrant Women Ottawa Events Team and with the support of CATWAO (Canadian and Turkish Women's Association of Ottawa), and with the participation of our esteemed Ambassador, Esra Demir.

Note: This event is open to all, regardless of background or nationality. Come join us in celebrating this significant milestone in Turkish history!

This year, we commemorate the remarkable centenary of the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye.

On the historic date of October 29, 1923, the nation proudly declared its status as a republic, adopting the distinguished title of Türkiye Cumhuriyeti, or "the Republic of Turkiye." Following this momentous declaration, the Grand National Assembly conducted a vote, electing Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as the inaugural President of the Republic of Turkey.

This pivotal shift catalyzed transformation across numerous spheres, notably in the empowerment of women within our society. Subsequent years saw the prohibition of polygamy and the establishment of equal divorce and inheritance rights.

Turkish women achieved voting rights in local elections by Act no. 1580 on 3 April 1930. Four years later, through legislation enacted on 5 December 1934, they gained full universal suffrage, earlier than many other countries.

The establishment of the Turkish Republic stands as a cornerstone of our cultural heritage, deserving of grand celebration. In light of this, we have taken active measures to lend our support to the Republic Day Ball scheduled for October 28, 2023, in Ottawa.  Further particulars regarding the event and ticketing information can be found below and in the attached poster.
